The Role She Was Born to Play

By Manuel Simons

Synopsis

A veteran actress is called to a theatre late one night only to discover she will be replaced in the role she was born to play. But the theatre is an echo chamber for roads not taken and roads that are reaching an end. Is history doomed to repeat itself or can she summon the strength to change her fate?

Manuel Simons

Manuel Simons is a playwright, performer, director, and producer whose work explores family, memory, trauma, humor, survival, and transformation. As a writer, Simons is drawn to stories in which private histories become public acts of theatre, where the domestic becomes mythic, the body remembers what language has not yet articulated, and characters struggle toward truth through contradiction, rupture, beauty, and performance.
Their plays include The Makeup Artist, Queer in the U.S.A., Unlikely Cowboys, The Life of Harry, and The Role She Was Born to Play. Their work has been performed in the United States and internationally, including presentations of their self-written solo work in London. Simons’s plays combine emotional specificity with theatrical imagination, moving fluidly among realism, direct address, comedy, memory, ritual, and heightened theatrical language. At the center of their writing is an enduring interest in how people survive what has shaped them, construct and reconstruct identity, and make themselves visible to one another.
Simons’s broader artistic career spans theatre, film, television, and live entertainment. Their directing credits include work at The Public Theater, The American Place Theatre, Nuyorican Poets Café, The Provincetown Playhouse, and The Living Theatre. As a performer, they have appeared onstage nationally and internationally and in film and television, including Spike Lee’s She Hate Me, Law & Order, Sex and the City, and The Sopranos.
Across their artistic practice, Simons approaches theatre as a space capable of holding contradiction: funny and devastating, intimate and epic, deeply personal and expansively communal. Their work seeks to reveal the complexity, theatricality, and beauty of the human condition.
