Five Ways to Find Your Place at Harbor

Walking into a theatre for the first time can be intimidating.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to audition but never felt experienced enough. Maybe you love theatre but have no desire to stand under a spotlight. Maybe you’re looking for a creative outlet, a way to meet people, or simply somewhere you can feel connected.

At Harbor Theatrics, we believe everyone has a place—and that place looks different for every person.

Here are five ways you can find yours.

1. Step Onto the Stage

You don’t need a long résumé or years of training to audition at Harbor. You just need the courage to walk through the door and give it a try.

Some performers come to us with decades of experience. Others haven’t been onstage since high school—or have never been onstage at all. Both belong in the room.

Auditioning can feel vulnerable, especially when you’re new. We understand that. Our goal is to create an environment where actors feel welcomed, respected, and encouraged throughout the process.

You may not get every role you audition for. None of us do. But every audition gives you the opportunity to grow, meet other artists, and become part of the Harbor community.

Your next role may be waiting for you.

2. Discover the World Backstage

The performers may receive the applause, but every production is built by an entire team of people working behind the scenes.

You could help build or paint a set, find props, create costumes, run lights or sound, assist with rehearsals, work on the stage crew, or help keep everything organized as a stage manager.

You don’t have to arrive knowing how to do all of those things. Community theatre should be a place where people can learn. If you’re curious, dependable, and willing to work alongside others, there may be someone at Harbor ready to teach you.

Backstage work is creative, collaborative, occasionally chaotic, and absolutely essential. For many people, it’s where theatre truly begins to feel like home.

3. Help Bring New Stories to Life

Harbor Theatrics isn’t only a place for established plays and musicals. We’re also committed to developing new work and supporting the people who create it.

Through programs such as the Safe Harbor Play Festival and the Harbor New Musical Initiative, playwrights, composers, actors, directors, and readers can participate in the development of original stories.

Maybe you’ve written a script and are ready to share it. Maybe you enjoy reading new work and offering thoughtful feedback. Maybe you’d love to participate in a staged reading or help a writer hear their characters aloud for the first time.

New theatre doesn’t arrive fully formed. It grows through conversation, experimentation, collaboration, and people who are willing to believe in a story before the rest of the world knows it exists.

You could be one of those people.

4. Volunteer Beyond the Production

Not every role at Harbor happens in a rehearsal room.

Producing theatre also requires people who can welcome audiences, sell concessions, distribute programs, assist with fundraising, take photographs, create marketing materials, organize events, and help us connect with the community.

Perhaps you have experience in business, education, social media, hospitality, fundraising, or nonprofit work. Perhaps you simply enjoy meeting people and making them feel welcome.

Those skills matter here.

You don’t have to call yourself an artist to contribute to the arts. Sometimes the person greeting an audience member at the door is just as important to their experience as the person standing onstage.

5. Join Us in the Audience

There’s another place at Harbor that matters just as much as any role onstage or backstage: a seat in the audience.

Theatre cannot exist without people willing to gather, listen, laugh, reflect, and experience a story together.

When you attend a production, you’re doing more than watching a show. You’re supporting local artists. You’re helping community theatre remain accessible. You’re participating in a shared experience that can never be recreated in exactly the same way again.

You can also support Harbor by telling a friend about a production, sharing one of our posts, purchasing season tickets, or inviting someone who may not normally attend live theatre.

Every full seat helps us continue creating opportunities for artists and audiences throughout our community.

Your Place Is Waiting

Finding your place doesn’t mean choosing one role forever.

You might begin in the audience, volunteer in the lobby, help paint a set, and eventually decide to audition. You might perform in one production and work backstage on the next. You might discover a talent you didn’t know you had—or find a community you didn’t realize you needed.

You also don’t have to know where you belong before you arrive.

Come curious. Come nervous. Come experienced. Come completely new.

Just come as you are.
