The Story
Gooseberry Lane
By Jim Danek
Set in 1935, at the once-grand summer estate of playwright Lawrence Gooseberry, Gooseberry Lane is a witty, nostalgic comedy about the theatre, the people who devote their lives to it, and the chaos that inevitably follows when larger-than-life personalities gather under one roof. Once the most fashionable retreat for Broadway's elite, Gooseberry's estate has fallen on hard times during the Great Depression, yet its faithful caretakers continue preparing for the annual reunion as though the glory days never ended.
As former producer Warren Trent, legendary diva Lady Bella Van Wermiskerkin Steiner, temperamental actress Unique Monique, her long-suffering assistant Billy Leach, mysterious solicitor Elbert Loovebug, and the enigmatic Luna Moonglow descend upon the estate, old rivalries are rekindled, theatrical egos collide, hidden identities emerge, and long-held secrets begin to unravel. Meanwhile, the absent Lawrence Gooseberry may hold the key to an unexpected mystery that threatens to change everyone's future.
Filled with razor-sharp dialogue, eccentric characters, mistaken identities, romantic complications, outrageous misunderstandings, and affectionate satire of the theatre world, Gooseberry Lane is a delightful farce that celebrates friendship, resilience, and the enduring magic of live performance. Equal parts heartwarming and hilarious, it's a love letter to every performer who's ever chased a standing ovation—and to the family they find along the way.
Perfect for audiences who enjoy classic ensemble comedies, Gooseberry Lane reminds us that while careers may fade and fortunes may change, the theatre always has one more curtain waiting to rise.
